Pentecost Sunday
May 10/11, 2008
Dear Parishioners,
Happy Mothers' Day! Thanks to our mothers, living and dead, for all they have done to raise us and to introduce us to God. We crown the statue of the Blessed Mother in the grotto in Weston this weekend, and a crowning will happen next week in connection with the First Communion in Lincoln. Mary, Mother of the Lord, is our spiritual mother too.
Pentecost, today's feast, is one of the most important celebrations of the Church's year. The Holy Spirit came to the Apostles and Mary. That same Spirit has come to us in Baptism and Confirmation, as well as in so many experiences of life. Pentecost's celebration brings to an end the wonderful Easter season, with its white vestments, prominently displayed Paschal candle and baptismal font, and first Sunday readings from the Acts of the Apostles. Next Sunday is Trinity Sunday, always the week after Pentecost.
File these next points under "I've Been Reading." It has been very enriching to gather with another book-discussion group. The current one ends this coming Tuesday night. It is a 5-week commitment that might interest you as we move into the future - and into some other books of religious wisdom. As a separate endeavor and for those who are able to meet on a weekday and are interested in discussing a whole book in one session, the parish Book Club that meets monthly in St. Joseph House; that group reads books that are not usually about Church matters directly but are still pertinent to the life believers are called to live in Christ.
As we move into a time of year when we gladly enjoy the better weather, many of you will be going away on weekends. Please remember to keep up your support of our parish. We have tried to offer many good resources and events, and your financial aid is needed to sustain all that we do as a parish. If you could give a more in the Offertory collection from week to week, that would be great.

Dear Parishioners,
Have you every felt a tug at your heart, leading you to consider new ways of nourishing your faith? Are you feeling that the hectic demands of life are preventing you from connecting with others as much as you would like? If so, you are not alone.
I am recommending ARISE Together in Christ. It has a proven track record of leading people into greater connection with others and God. There is nothing very technical or unusual about it, but it produces splendid results. It builds on skills and methods that ordinary folks can bring and share.
Like many parishes all around Eastern Massachusetts, St. Julia Parish is getting involved in ARISE. Our meetings will happen right here in Weston and Lincoln, in homes and in our parish properties in both towns.
Our community has been through some rough times in the past decade. The clergy abuse scandal discouraged many from taking part in Church activities, and some who stayed involved lost some of their fire. ARISE can be a rekindling. The closing and realigning of parishes locally also brought confusion and anger. ARISE offers a chance to get involved again in a way that shows that Church can best be: communities of faithful people supporting one another in searching for God and being strong, joyful Christians in very day life.
I am convinced that greater life can come to our parish community if a good number of individuals enter into this process. It is not preachy or arm-twisting. Each meeting provides a mix of inspiring reading, friendly discussion, solid learning and insights pertinent to everyday life - in a small group of parishioners. The commitment is for one series of six weekly meetings of 90 minutes each.
I support this wholeheartedly. Let's make this journey together!

IS THERE ANYONE SICK AMONG YOU? The Sacrament of the Sick is for Catholics prior to surgery of when someone is seriously ill. This sacrament is not to be viewed as "Last Rites", but as a powerful instrument of God's healing presence. But if you know someone who wishes to be anointed, please don't hesitate to call the rectory to coordinate a time.
